OVERALL WINNER OF NS&I’S GROWING GARDENS TODAY COMPETITION ANNOUNCED BY CAROL KLEIN

15 June 2009

Sally Wilding-Webb presented award at BBC Gardeners’ World Live

Visitors to BBC Gardeners’ World Live have voted for their favourite sustainable garden  and Carol Klein yesterday announced the overall winner of the NS&I Growing Gardens Today competition, held at BBC Gardeners’ World Live in Birmingham. Sally Wilding-Webb from Devon was awarded the trophy by Carol Klein, for her winning design ‘Everything in the garden’.

Sally commented, “I’m delighted to have won the competition, I found the competition by chance when checking my Premium Bond numbers on the NS&I website. This is the first show garden I have built and through it I hoped to encourage others to be imaginative with their own gardens, at the same time as reviewing how they can adapt their gardening to best preserve their environment. It’s very flattering that visitors to the show have voted for my design.

“ ‘Everything in the garden’ exemplifies a place of relaxation and a garden that is much more than a fruit and veg plot.  Featuring a pond to encourage wildlife, lavender to welcome bees for pollination and a variety of home grown produce I have attempted to produce a sustainable garden, making use of recycled waste such as vegetable peelings and garden clippings.”

Sally Wilding-Webb has been involved in gardening for as long as she can remember. She has the gardening gene in her blood, having come from a family of gardeners. Her grandfather was a classically trained Victorian Head Gardener and her father hand-built lawnmowers and gardening equipment for a living.

In addition to winning the NS&I Growing Gardens Today competition ‘Everything in the garden’ was awarded a Bronze RHS medal at the show.

In the first stage, three innovative and modern garden designs entered into the NS&I Growing Gardens Today competition, in association with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), were selected to be displayed at BBC Gardeners’ World Live in Birmingham. Each winner received a £5,000 grant to develop their 25m² garden which was to incorporate growing fruit and veg, in conjunction with NS&I’s support of the RHS Grow Your Own campaign.

The designers of the two other gardens on display, Christopher Parry and Rene Humphrey from Bath and Sheila Jean Dearing from Devon, were also awarded RHS medals at the event.
