Press releaseVIEW THE VEG AND VOTE FOR THE BEST NS&I GARDEN AT BBC GARDENERS’ WORLD LIVE06 June 2008Winners of NS&I Growing Gardens Today competition head to Birmingham Look out for NS&I’s three gardens at next week’s BBC Gardeners’ World Live in Birmingham. You can view the NS&I Growing Gardens Today competition winners in the Grow Your Own area of the show, and even vote for your favourite garden, as well as picking up good money-saving tips and ideas for contemporary working gardens. Three innovative and modern designs were selected as winners in the NS&I competition, in association with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). Each winner received a £5,000 grant to develop their 25m² garden, incorporating growing vegetables as a key focus. This is in conjunction with NS&I’s ongoing sponsorship of the RHS Grow Your Own Veg campaign. The winners: Andy Tudbury from Nottingham has reached the point where he just wants to get things underway at the NEC Birmingham! He was awarded a Bronze medal at last year’s BBC Gardeners’ World Live for his first show garden. Andy’s Food for life (located at Stand GA22) is an unusual design showcasing that even with limited space, a vegetable garden does not need to be dull, but can be both attractive and practical. His design combines a wide variety of vegetables with a selection of fruit and herbs. Claire Potter from East Sussex is an interior designer by trade and hopes her garden will encourage people to think differently. Her Garden of three R’s (Stand GA23) displays the possibilities that come from thinking imaginatively, having fun and incorporating the three R’s – reduce, reuse, recycle. By not only growing your own (her garden incorporates over three dozen different varieties of vegetables that are easy to grow in a small space), but recycling at the same time you can reward yourself with a double pat on the back. Peter Stevens is a largely self-taught garden designer. He and his company, Peter Stevens Garden Design, based in Leicestershire have exhibited previously at the BBC Gardeners’ World Live exhibition in collaboration with James Green of James Green Landscapes, winning a silver gilt medal and two silver medals in previous years. His garden uses some recycled and reclaimed materials. With vegetable growing on the rise, Peter’s garden, Vegout (Stand GA24) endeavours to show how a small space can still maximise on ‘growing’ area. Peter’s plants and vegetables are easy to grow, while still producing tasty results. Tim Mack, Head of Marketing and Communications at NS&I commented, "Gardens of the future will incorporate diversity and good environmental practices. We are delighted that our three gardens include ‘grow your own’ vegetables, in addition to some great money-saving ideas, and making excellent use of recycled items.” All three gardens are located in the Grow Your Own area at Stands GA22-GA24 at the NEC. Visitors to the show or the NS&I website will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite NS&I garden. A vote can be easily cast by either text message or online. Voting commences at 9:00am on Wednesday 11 June 2008 and closes at midday on Sunday 15 June 2008.
