NS&I QUARTERLY SAVINGS SURVEY: ISSUE 10

27 February 2007

WINTER 2006/07 QUARTERLY SAVINGS SURVEY MAIN RESULTS RELEASED ON 6 MARCH UNDER EMBARGO FOR 9 MARCH 2007

National Savings and Investments (NS&I) will be publishing its tenth Quarterly Savings Survey on 9 March. The winter 2006/07 survey provides an incisive and continuous view of the UK savings market, tracking the development of savings trends over both the last quarter and the last year. The survey also covers the predicted savings outlook for the coming months.

The winter 2006/07 Quarterly Savings Survey will reveal:

  • A seasonal decrease in savings levels
  • The lowest savings aspirations for nearly two years
  • But regular savers saving more
  • A high percentage of first-time buyers considering migrating to save for a deposit on their first home in Britain.

Barriers to saving

The Quarterly Savings Survey will look in detail at the factors stopping people saving, such as the decline in take-home incomes, increasing demands on people’s finances.

Dax Harkins, senior savings strategist at NS&I, says: “Christmas time always puts pressure on people’s finances, with the resulting debt hangover making it difficult to save.  Now we are fast-approaching the ISA season, it is a good time for people to reassess their finances, resolving to save any spare money, using their annual tax-free ISA allowance to maximise their savings.”

Media briefings

Interviews will be available on the Savings Survey with Dax Harkins, senior savings strategist at NS&I.
