OLDHAM TOPS UK PREMIUM BOND PRIZE LEAGUE[1]

01 April 2005

LUCKIEST TOWNS 2004/05

Oldham is the UK’s luckiest town for winning top Premium Bond prizes in 2004/05, knocking Sunderland off of the top spot. Salisbury, Lancaster and East London were second, third and fourth, respectively, with Halifax, Galashiels and Central London East being the unluckiest.

The league table (below) shows the top 10 towns across the UK for winning top Premium Bond prizes between March 2004 and February 2005 as a proportion of the number of Premium Bonds held in their area. The analysis was based on the top 120 postcodes in the UK.

Across the UK, 23 million people own Premium Bonds worth £26 billion, all of which are entered into each monthly draw winning more than 1 million prizes worth over £69 million from £50 to the jackpot £1 million.

Both Oldham and Salisbury’s luck changed vastly in 2004, Oldham improved its position on last year rising from 48th to first and Salisbury improved from 59th to second.

Doncaster, Redhill and North London were the highest climbers jumping by over 80 places to reach the top 10. Exeter has performed the most consistently with two years inside the top 11.

UNLUCKIEST TOWNS 2003/04

Halifax has slipped from the top half of the table in 2003/04 to become the unluckiest town over the last year, taking the title from Motherwell the previous year.  However, the highest faller is Central London East which has slipped from seventh in 2003/04 to 118th in 2004/05. Wigan has also exchanged a top twenty spot for a place in Britain’s unluckiest towns over the last year, moving from 14th to 112th. Fortunately, luck does change as can be seen by huge rises for Doncaster, Redhill and North London.

Sally Swait, Premium Bonds manager at National Savings and Investments comments:

“Congratulations to Oldham. The top 10 show that luck in winning Premium Bond prizes is spread across the UK with places like Oldham and Salisbury luckier than the rest in the past year.

“Every one of the 23 million people owning Premium Bonds has the chance to win but who knows what combinations ERNIE, the Premium Bond number cruncher, will choose to be the luckiest over the coming year.”
