Press releaseSURVEY SHOWS FORGOTTEN FORTUNES SET TO RISE AS PEOPLE FAIL TO FORWARD NEW ADDRESS TO FINANCIAL PROVIDERS13 May 2002National Savings and Investments Tracing Service reunites investors with £2 million in first six months A survey commissioned by National Savings and Investments has revealed that 1 in 7 (14%) of those who move home do not give their new address to their financial providers. With around 13% of people moving home each year, more and more of Britain's savers are losing touch with their money. The survey also showed that people in Scotland (95%) are the best at remembering to forward their new address, whilst the South West are most likely to forget; with only 80% forwarding their new address. In November 2001, National Savings and Investments launched a free of charge Tracing Service for its customers to help re-unite them with lost and forgotten accounts, bonds and unclaimed Premium Bond prizes. So far, over £2 million has been traced from 1,855 successful searches. Customers are able to use the one-stop service to trace their dormant National Savings and Investments funds by completing one simple form and sending it to one central point. Gill Cattanach, Commercial Director, National Savings and Investments said: "Moving home is so stressful that as well as typical things that people forget when they move such as tools in sheds and heirlooms in attics, a significant number of British savers and investors forget their money. This sets financial providers like National Savings and Investments a real challenge to make it easy for people to re-unite themselves with their savings. Our Tracing Service has proved to be a popular way of doing this and we want people to use it more. Customers can be assured that any lost or forgotten savings will remain 100% secure and held indefinitely until a claim for them is lodged." Scottish memories are the best The research showed that people living in Scotland were by far the best at advising a new address with only one in twenty people forgetting to pass this information on to financial organisations. This is four times better than those in the South West, where one in five forget. Notes to Editors
